"POLITICS AND THE INDIVIDUAL IN THE TWENTIETH CENTURY"
2nd July 2021 - at 18.00cet
Zoom Video Conference
On Friday 2nd July at 18.00 CET continues the series of meetings “Subject and masses. Psychoanalysis and the politics of the unconscious”.
Guests of the seventh webinar:
Giovanni Orsina with a speech entitled “POLITICS AND THE INDIVIDUAL IN THE TWENTIETH CENTURY”
The liberal state, writes the jurist Ernst-Wolfgang Böckenförde, is nourished by presuppositions that it cannot itself guarantee: it functions if it is inhabited by individuals of a certain “moral substance”, but is unable to construct them.
Freud‘s essay on group psychology and the analysis of the ego is at the root of that contradiction. It is not by chance that it was published right after the Great War and at the beginning of two decades that saw liberalism touch its nadir, and dialogues with a literature that had anticipated the illiberal catastrophes of the “Thirty Years War”.
Giovanni Orsina‘s seminar will present some historical considerations on the twentieth-century avatars of Böckenförde’s paradox: on the difficulties that liberal democracy had to face when it began to look inside the “black box” of the individual, and on how it solved them (or failed to solve them) in the hundred years that separate us from Freud’s essay.
Italy is certainly not the only country experiencing a growth in populism, but it is Italy that invites psychoanalysts, historians and philosophers, both in Italy and abroad, to reflect on current’s relationship between “Subject and Masses”.
One hundred years after the publication of Sigmund Freud’s Group Psychology and the Analysis of the Ego (Massenpsychologie und Ich-Analyse, Sigmund Freud, 1921), the Psychoanalytic Institute for Social Research (IPRS), the Institute of Advanced Studies in Psychoanalysis “Elvio Fachinelli” (ISAP), the European Journal of Psychoanalysis, the Institute for European Research in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy (IREP) and the Department of Dynamic and Clinical Psychology of Sapienza University, are launching a series of 15 free webinars to be held between 19th February and 17th December 2021 at 18:00 CET.
