- Restorative Justice and Crime Prevention (Giustizia riparativa e prevenzione del crimine)
-
Restorative justice is most commonly seen as a set of practices that puts the victim at the centre of the response to crime and, at the same time, attempts to induce the offender to take responsibility for the consequences of the crime committed. Research on restorative justice has shown that these practices can prevent crime. However, practitioners and academics have been reluctant to inscribe RJ in crime prevention policy. This project tackles this issue, looking at the role of restorative justice in crime prevention efforts and its efficacy as a means for reducing crime. The primary issues addressed include:
- the possible connecting points between restorative justice theory and crime prevention models;
- the extent to which restorative justice is inscribed in crime prevention policies in EU Member States; and
- an analysis of restorative justice processes and effects, notably in relation to re-offending. The project also seeks to create bridges and networks between experts in different Member States by involving them in an experts meeting and final seminar that will bring together a range of stakeholders.
